AI fights bare-handed. Hilt gives it a sword and a shield.

Hilt is an instrument for autonomous AI agents.

What Hilt is being built to add to any agent. Nothing here is available yet.

  • One connection, every tool you allow

Hilt sits between an agent and its tools, so a single connection gives the agent every tool you permit, whichever model drives it.

  • Tools on demand

An agent starts with a short index of what it can use and loads each tool only when the task calls for it, so its context holds the work instead of every tool's manual.

  • Faster reasoning

Steps an agent has already taken, such as files it has read and answers it has looked up, are cached and reused, so it does not pay twice for the same step.

  • Hallucination checks

Before an agent acts on a claim, Hilt checks it against what the tools actually returned and flags anything nothing supports.

  • Lower token use

Long tool outputs are cut down to what the task needs before they reach the model, so each step costs fewer tokens.

The mandate file.

A person states the task and its bounds once. Hilt holds the agent to them.

# mandate.yaml
task: Upgrade the logging library in the API service
repository: api-service

may:
  - read and edit files in this repository
  - run the test suite
  - open a pull request

may_not:
  - push to main
  - read credentials or .env files
  - reach any host except the package registry

ask_first:
  - deleting files
  - changing the database schema

What it stops.

The threats Hilt is designed against, and what it does about each.

ThreatThe riskWhat Hilt does
Prompt injectionA page, file or tool output carries instructions the agent was never given.Everything the agent reads is scanned and marked untrusted, and untrusted text cannot trigger an action on its own.
Secret exfiltrationThe agent is steered into sending keys, tokens or private files somewhere it should not.Secrets stay outside the agent's context, and outbound requests that would carry them are blocked.
Scope creepThe agent wanders beyond its task, into other repositories, systems or people's data.A mandate file states what the agent may and may not touch, and anything outside it is refused.
Destructive commandsThe agent deletes, force-pushes or overwrites something that cannot be undone.Irreversible actions pause for a person's approval before they run.
